Unborn Child Killed In Car Crash

A St. Cloud woman’s unborn child was killed in a crash Friday involving a suspected drunk driver, and the woman remains in critical condition. According to the St. Cloud Police Department, the crash occurred just before 1 p.m. in the 3200 block of Fifth Street North. The driver of an SUV was traveling west on Fifth Street when they veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an eastbound minivan, police said. The minivan caught fire, leaving the driver pinned inside. The driver, a 34-year-old St. Cloud woman, was extricated by St. Cloud fire crews and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. In a Saturday update, police said the woman remained in critical condition. She was in the late stages of pregnancy at the time of the crash, and her unborn child did not survive. The driver of the SUV, a 32-year-old Avon man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he was believed to be impaired, with alcohol listed as a contributing factor. He was taken to the Stearns County Jail, where he is being held on charges related to the crash.
