The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office announced Monday that a Todd County man will spend the next 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting six children over seven years. Mervin C. Kauffman was sentenced Monday to 360 months in prison after pleading guilty June 5 to six counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Kauffman assaulted the six juveniles between Aug. 14, 2015, and Sept. 5, 2022, according to the Attorney General’s Office. The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case after Todd County Attorney John Lindemann referred it under a state law that allows the attorney general to step in on criminal cases at a county attorney’s request. “Nothing can ever make up for the abuse these young people suffered at Kauffman’s hands, and my heart continues to go out to them and their families,” Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a statement. “I am, however, pleased to see the court impose a stiff sentence on Kauffman for his horrific acts and hope that this marks a moment of healing for the victims.” The Todd County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
