A traffic stop early Saturday morning, February 14, led to a pursuit that crossed state lines and ended with a crash in Minnesota. Around 2:41 a.m., a Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on County Road 17 near 64th Avenue North. Deputies determined that the 39-year-old driver, Nicholas Wessels, had active arrest warrants. When Wessels was advised that he was under arrest, he refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle and fled the scene. Deputies immediately initiated a pursuit and deployed a tire deflation device, which was successful in disabling the vehicle’s tires. Despite the damage, the vehicle continued fleeing at speeds ranging between 30 and 70 miles per hour, causing damage to the roadway. The target vehicle fled into Minnesota from 40th Avenue North. When the vehicle entered Minnesota, Cass County deputies terminated the pursuit but continued to follow at a safe distance. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Moorhead Police Department deployed a tire deflation device after the vehicle entered Minnesota but did not initiate a pursuit. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle crashed, and Wessels fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement officers. Wessels was transported to a local hospital for evaluation prior to being booked into the Clay County Jail, where he is being held on their charges. Two adult female passengers were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Neither was injured, and both were released from the scene. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and will be forwarding its report to the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of multiple criminal charges.
