A Cass County sheriff’s deputy was shot and a male suspect was killed Sunday evening during an exchange of gunfire following a foot pursuit in rural Walker, authorities said. The incident began at 4:37 p.m. when the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting gunshots heard near residences in the area of Old Agency Drive and Onigum Road Northwest (County Road 13) in Turtle Lake Township, Sheriff Bryan Welk said. Deputies responded to the area and began investigating. A short time later, deputies attempted to contact a male subject walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road Northwest. The man fled on foot, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and deputies. One deputy was shot and airlifted to a Fargo hospital for treatment. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Body-worn cameras were active during the incident, Welk said. The deputies involved have been placed on critical incident leave pending the investigation. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has taken over the investigation and is leading the case. The BCA will release additional information as it becomes available. The condition of the wounded deputy was not immediately released. The identity of the deceased suspect has not been disclosed.
